On April 26, 2020, the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) research base of medical devices was officially settled, and meanwhile Institute of Regulatory Science for Medical Device was established in Sichuan University (SCU).

Weilin XU, vice president of SCU, and Deyuan JIANG, commissioner of Department of Medical Device Registration of NMPA, read out the ‘Decision to establish the Institute of Regulatory Science for Medical Devices of Sichuan University’ and ‘Decision to establish the Research Base of Regulatory Science for Medical Devices of NMPA’.

Xingdong ZHANG, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, briefly introduced the preparation of the Institute and Research Base. He pointed out that the Research Base is a multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research center, jointly led by the NMPA and SCU and engaged in scientific research and activities of medical devices regulation. It is also a platform for international cooperation and communication about study on medical devices regulation. Additionally, it is the training center for regulatory science for medical devices innovative talents. It will focus on innovative products and new technologies in the national development plan of medical devices, taking the research on the regulatory science of biomaterials and implantable devices as the breakthrough point, gradually expand and establish a scientific regulation system covering the whole medical devices, finally realizing the construction of a scientific system of medical devices with Chinese characteristics.
